FOLEY / SFX / SOUND DESIGN FOR ANIMATION : HOLY MOLY
Above: Highlight reel from Releases 2 and 3 of "Holy Moly", a line of animated educational DVDs used by Sunday school classes and youth groups in the K-5 age range, produced by the Sparkhouse line at Augsburg Fortress Publishers. My role: primarily sound effects creation/ implementation, music supervision (working closely with composer Curtis Allen Hager), sound design, and mix. Occasional voiceover engineering and voice performance.
The "Holy Moly" print materials feature characters rendered as paper shapes that children can color in, cut out and move around. The animations expand these pieces into a narrative to augment the day's lesson. The cartoons bring the 2D materials to life as a narrative. The cutout characters spin in space, and are colored in or drained of color as they lose faith and gain it again. The above video focuses on Releases 2 (Advent and Christmas stories) and 3 (New Testament stories with an emphasis on Jesus' parables).
The characters' speech is entirely nonsense phrases improvised by the actors, voiced to match the emotive impact of scripted phrases. Sound effects range from a standard library to a variety of custom cues. In keeping with the organic aesthetic of the print materials, I developed a palette of sounds derived entirely from vocalizations. These make up many of the subtler aspects of the piece, often sweetening sounds from the standard library. 2012.
Above: similar work from Holy Moly Release 1, focusing on stories from the the Old Testament. I also recorded the kids yelling "Holy Moly!" for the stinger at the top. 2012.
