ANTIGONE

A highlight reel of my work on Macalester College's 2011 production of the Greek tragedy "Antigone", for which I served as composer, music director, and sound designer.

For this production I assembled five student performers (Eva Beal, Tom Grotenwohl, Joe Nagel, Maxray Savage, and Patricia Wendt) and developed cues improvisationally with the ensemble. Instrumentation included acoustic and electric guitar, flute, clarinet, bells, detuned autoharps, assorted percussion, found objects like paint buckets and wooden dowels, and a Chinese instrument called the ruan.

Music cues underscored passages of narrative tension and punctuated moments of emotive intensity. The aesthetic was raw and visceral; director Randy Reyes wanted the world of the play to be war-torn, ragged and run down, almost post-apocalyptic.
